Things To Do
You're never sure of great ways to pass the time in the area! When you're in what we call "The Bay" you have easy access to the three main towns, Torquay, Paignton and Brixham, and nearby. There are plenty of attractions to visit and things to do.
Of course, we personally have places which are definitely on a lot of people's bucket lists - Agatha Christie's Greenway House for one, and - although it's a bit further away - the Eden Project for another.
But the famous things aside, we have many more attractions in the Bay. To highlight just a few -
Kents Cavern is a prehistoric cave and only about a mile from the Somerville.
Paignton Zoo is really much more of a zoo than you would imagine from a seaside town and we thought it was really worth the visit (take the 22 bus from outside the Somerville and it will take you directly there).
Take the tour of Torre Abbey on the seafront and follow the medieval tour or, even closer, (200 yards) is the Torquay Museum where you can see Agatha Christie-related artefacts.
Cockington Court is either a bus-ride or a two mile hike - which is in itself quite beautiful as it's a mix of seafront walk then woodland). The Court itself hostds an excellent craft centre - and most excellent afternoon tea. (Please remember you are in Devon and the clotted cream goes on the bottom and jam on top!)
If you take the ferry across to Brixham then you can turn yourself back into a pirate and visit the Golden Hind - there various events during the year and these can be quite hilarious to see! (I haven't walked the plank myself.)
We shouldn't forget two towns outside the bay, Babbacombe and St Marychurch. Babbacombe is definitely worth a visit as they have the (famous) model village - which is not JUST for kids. We thought it was quite amazing, especially in the summer when they do they night tours.
In contrast, Bygones in St Marychurch is a perfect place to go when the rain arrives - it takes you back to Victorian times and is rather entertaining for everyone.
Of course that's just our selection. There are links to the places we've mentioned and more besides below - feel free to ask if you'd like any more information.
