Well, the season has been a little slow to get going after an unseasonably unpleasant rainy start. But we are now into a dry spell and looking forward to an enjoyably busy summer ahead. As always, there’s plenty to enjoy here in this corner of the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things Near …<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Our garden is looking particularly wonderful this year. I’m particularly pleased that my Aeoniums are looking healthy again. It was a harsh winter at times, with temperatures close to freezing – which my babies hate! The baskets are looking amazing too, helped by the fact that they receive lots of sun at the front of the building. On the downside, they are forever thirsty. Watering a garden of the size of The Somerville can take a fair old while – but the rewards make it worthwhile. And, of course, guests are very welcome to enjoy it.<\/p>\n\n\n

… And Things Further Afield<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As you might know, I am always discovering new places to recommend – and here’s a new one. Recently I did a cycle ride with an old mountain bike buddy from Henley, and went to Kingswear and across on the ferry to Dartmouth. From there we went on the off-road track (which is walkable too) to Dittisham, where the most delightful pub, The Ferryboat Inn, sits alongside the River Dart. The little ferry takes you across the river directly to Greenway, which was Agatha Christie’s home<\/strong><\/a>. (It’s now a National Trust property.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don\u2019t fancy the walk from Dartmouth to Dittisham you can always take the boat upstream for a fab lunch and a stroll around the quintessential village. There’s also the option to dine at the Anchor Stone caf\u00e9, which serves some excellent seafood and is adjacent to the Ferry Boat Inn.<\/p>\n\n\n

Looking Up<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We recently enjoyed the Torbay Airshow – this being the fifth year. As always, it offered a spectacular display of different aircraft and each day finishes with the Red Arrows – and they never disappoint. We already have four bookings for next year\u2019s airshow weekend! (If you fancy it yourself, grab a room or suite now!) Planning Ahead<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just a word of friendly advice. If you are booking a stay at The Somerville over the coming summer please also check out our eating out guide<\/strong><\/a> on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too often, customers arrive and say they will just wander into town and find a restaurant… but that\u2019s unlikely to be possible at peak times. If you bear in mind that the guests at every B&B in the area will be doing the same thing… booking ahead is the sensible thing to do! (And our eating out guide has all the contact details.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We’re Number One<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes, we know, on the whole blowing your own trumpet isn’t a great thing to be doing. But we have to say we are very pleased that Trip Advisor is ranking us the top B&B in Torbay and the eighth best in the UK. All we can say is a heartfelt thank-you, for all your reviews and support.<\/p>\n\n\n
