Here at The Somerville we are now at ‘warp speed’ , as the season is full steam ahead and Helen is busy baking those wonderful cakes whilst I’m making the tea for guests. I know my place in life!
With June upon us, our gardens are starting to bloom and show how wonderful our climate is. The beautiful palms in the back garden are looking fantastic but they’re possibly outdone by the rock roses. Generally, these are plants that will only survive a milder ‘English Riviera’ winter, as they need to be brought inside into a conservatory to keep the frost away from their delicate leaves. We often have our guests take a cutting of the rock roses as they can be planted easily and flourish quickly. The photos, below, show them off at their best. Of course, they’re not alone in the garden, but as the bedding plants and baskets are only just coming out I will post some more pictures during the summer to show you our array of flowers.
Of course, summer isn’t just about gardens. We recently had the Torbay Air Show and the weather was kind to us all. It was a little windy and the blue sky was intermingled with the clouds but that didn’t stop a wonderful time being had by all. The Red Arrows, as ever, were breath-taking on both Saturday and Sunday and the finale of each day was the Typhoon. This is an incredible machine – but if you were having an afternoon snooze you would definitely be woken up by its thunderous engines!
I’m pleased to be able to report that the show attracted some 150,000 visitors this year. If you fancy enjoying the spectacle yourself, do book early for next year’s event! We really thought it was an excellent weekend of aviation.
Looking ahead, just to let you know – and because I love them – we have the ELO Experience coming to the Princess Theatre on 27th July. ( I can arrange tickets for you without paying the booking fees – just call me.) At the time of writing we have two rooms left, so if you fancy a bit of ‘Mr Blue Sky’ …
And the ELO Experience aside, we do still have some vacancies here and there for the coming weeks. Don’t give up with booking a break with us! Give me a ring here at The Somerville and I always will endeavour to find some dates for you: 01803 294755.
Wishing everyone a truly lovely summer – see you soon
Peter and Helen
PS: Don’t forget that if you are coming at peak times (and certainly at the weekends), please phone me so I can reserve a table for you, and do feel free to check-out our restaurant recommendations first. I wouldn’t want you taking your partner out to a late-night drive-through meal out of desperation!
