Well, after a rather successful Jubilee weekend in the town, with the Airshow and the Bootleg Beatles the star attractions (in our eyes at least!), summer’s truly arrived.
Bookings are already looking fabulous (thank you) – probably helped by all the press reports of all the hassles with flights and the long delays at airports. (It must be said it would put us off.) BUT we do have vacancies dotted over the coming months and the situation is always fluid.
Do remember to call us (01803 294755) to see what the current situation is. Phoning is the only way to be right up to date – online booking lags behind.
In The Garden
In the time since our last journal update, we grabbed ourselves a couple of days away for ourselves. No, we weren’t heading to the beach! We drove down to Penzance to collect more Aeoniums from ‘Surreal Succulents’. This is a nursery that’s recently won a Gold Medal at Chelsea for the second time – and we can certainly see why. Yes, we did buy a (small) range new varieties but we for us the most exciting addition is the Medusa. This is very much a prize Aeonium with fabulous red and pink leaves. It is not in our gardens yet, as we need to carefully nurture it before planting it in the ground. But give it time …
Summer Napping
For everyone who is planning on staying in our Courtyard suite, you might find yourself dozing outdoors when you’re here. We have just replaced the outside seating with a hanging egg swing chair. We can report that it’s perfect for an afternoon nap – for example, after a day out discovering South Devon.
Summer Trips
And talking of discovering, one of our personal favourite local places to visit is Teignmouth and Shaldon. These are either side of the River Teign, about five miles away. You can take the car or the bus, which leaves right outside the Somerville every hour to take you to Teignmouth then onto Dawlish. If you get off at Shaldon you can take the little ferryboat across the river to Teignmouth for £1.50.
Of course you can explore any of the local hostelries but one of our favourites is the Ship Inn. And that has the advantage of being next door to a great fish restaurant call the Crab Shack.
Below are two photos. The first was taken with my phone. The second is a picture of a print by local artist Laura Wall, who has a gallery very close by in Teignmouth.
Oh, I nearly forgot to mention, there is a fabulous pasty shop directly opposite the gallery. They make all their own varieties including Steak and Stilton, a real favourite.
Summer Skies
Finally, this summer has produced some particularly wonderful skies of late … a couple of which are below.
And that’s it for this summer update. Don’t forget – as I mentioned above, do call us (01803 294755) to check on up to the minute vacancies.
