With the clock change it seems the nights are drawing in far more quickly this autumn. We have just three weeks left before our well-earned break, which starts on the 22nd November.
Well-earned? We reckon so! It’s been a pretty hectic last few months. But it’s been good to be busy, and it’s good, too, to see other really positive signs are about in Torquay. A good barometer is the Princess Theatre, which properly back and running. We went to see Chicago on the opening night and it was a truly fantastic performance by the cast and the musicians in the band. They’ve some fabulous shows over the coming months – its an attraction we often recommend to visitors.
Arrivals To Try
As well as recommending the theatre, we have a couple of new venues to suggest to you when you are visiting. The recently opened piano bar, called Elton’s (funnily enough), is just 300 yards down the road. There’s a really talented pianist there, who will play whatever you ask him too … and let’s just say the cocktails are worth a try!
And if that’s not enough, as ex-publicans of a country pub, we were delighted to find the most lovely refurbished pub called The Thatched Tavern in Maidencombe. This is about four miles away, by the most idyllic cove. The food is fabulous and reasonably priced with fresh local produce.
Art Deco
During our winter closure we will be re-fitting a new bathroom in Room 8, one of our ‘superior deluxe’ rooms. Our plumber questioned why we are re-doing it as, in his words, ‘it looks fine’. But as you know, we have very high standards! Hence the Art Deco tiles have been chosen along with a new sink and more besides …. Work will start on the 22nd – we’ll keep everyone informed on social media as we progress with it.
Antique Shop Madness
And talking of Art Deco, yes, we love that period and whilst stuck in a traffic jam in Cornwall recently we ended up pulling into an Antique Shop. And yes, we did rather overspend on three rather lovely bronze ladies on Onyx plinths. These are copies (still from the 1920s) of the Romanian Bronze sculptor Chiparus’ work, whose sculptures were heavily copied in Paris for his Ballet figurines. They now take pride of place in our lounge – or perhaps we should call it the drawing room!
And A Late Break
As I write, we have some rooms available during November. If you fancy a midweek break (midweek because at weekends we are nearly full), give us a ring (01803 294755) for an upgrade to a suite! (Subject to availability – so don’t delay!)
And that’s about it for this November update.
