At last, Spring is upon us, the daffodils are flowering and all of the tourist attractions are slowly opening up. It’s surprising to realise that this will be our our first Easter in three years because, of course, Covid spoilt the last two.
Celebrations …
Talking of surprises, on the 10th March we celebrate six years at The Somerville. Where did all those years go. Our decision to leave our beloved pub and start up again by the seaside seems a very distant memory. We hope you’ll agree that we have made a success of it!
As a gift to ourselves to mark this six year anniversary we treated ourselves to the most beautiful Art Deco 1920s Grandmother Clock. It now has taken its place in our lounge area adjacent to the reception desk. It has the most wonderful Westminster Chimes but you will have to come and visit to hear them.

… And More Celebrations
It’s not just us that’s celebrating – Torquay is planning to mark the Queens 70th anniversary celebrations in June and that will coincide with the Torbay Air Show. (Indeed, do bear in mind in that the summer is already booking-up fast. In fact, for the Air Show weekend only have two rooms left. You know the score – book now!)
Start As You Mean To Go On
As you know, we pride ourselves on our (award winning) breakfasts. Well, a little while ago we were buying our ham from our local butcher as we always do, and Helen mentioned cooking and glazing ourselves, for our breakfast buffet and our Eggs Benedict. So that’s what we’ve done! Here it is in three stages: boiled, then glazed and then carved. Lovely!

And If You Need To Walk It Off
And if you find yourself in need of a good walk after a good breakfast, then we have a new one to share with you. Some retired ‘B&B friends’ have moved to Newton Abbot (relatively nearby), so we explored the walk along the River Teign- naturally to a watering hole, Coombe Cellars, for lunch along the way. It proved a very scenic seven mile route and not too strenuous. Do remember that we have lots of walking books in our reception for you to peruse. And, say it ourselves, we’ve quite lot of good local knowledge to share for walks either on the South West coastal path or inland.

Tell Us!
We are always thinking how to improve stays with us and customer feedback is a vital element to this. Quite often, we simply might not notice a potential problem because it’s all too familiar. A perfect example is a guest who mentioned our steps up or down to the garden were a little precarious. With the help of our excellent handyman we have come up with a handrail to assist those that need it. It’s very satisfying to make a positive difference.
