Well, after a long hard summer the kids have returned to school. Naturally, in turn our clientele changes at this time of year, to those aiming to avoid the hectic summer weeks. It’s nice to be able to say that September has been a busy month, with the weather helping our autumn season visitors make the most of South Devon.
Award Winners
We had some fabulous news in early September, when we were given a Rose Award from Visit England (the governing body of accommodation in the UK). Nationwide, annually only 100 business are chosen to receive this prestigious recognition, which is for outstanding service to guests. We were honoured to receive the award from Lady Borthwick (the patron of Visit England) at a ceremony at a fabulous hotel in Newbury, Berkshire. All in all, a very gratifying achievement.

A New Favourite
On the restaurant news, Torquay’s No 7 bistro is our long-stranding favourite for a top-end fish restaurant. However, we now have a new favourite in Babbacombe, the Waddling Duck. This quite new bistro is led by the owner Lydia along with her head chef husband Russell. In our experience the quality of the food is simply amazing and the service is charming. What’s more, they have introduced an offer of £28 for two courses on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Well worth a visit, even if it does require cab trip up the hill to get there.

My, How Things Change
Quite by chance, I recently found an old photo of the Somerville in 1970, so a mere 54 years ago! It’s quite amazing how it has been transformed from a 22 bedroomed hotel with no en suites to the Somerville of today – an eight bedroomed boutique B&B with beautiful large suites. Amazing and – to judge by our customers’ comments – successful.
