Well, here’s to a good summer! It has a lot to live up to after an incredible Easter in the UK, during which there was hardly a bed spare in the whole of Torbay. It’s a lovely area so its popularity is understandable!
In The Garden
As the gardeners among you will know, this is a prime time for gardening and we’ve been working hard, putting in new bedding plants. The hanging baskets have arrived from West Country Baskets and they’re looking good too.
Things To Do
It’s been a busy six weeks or so just generally, but we’ve been trying hard to check out some local excursions too. (It’s hard work, but someone has to do it.)
The newest trip is a round robin one, on a boat from Torquay to Teignmouth, taking in Thatcher Rock and in all the wonderful rock formations we have on the coast, then returning on the wonderful GWR coastal train journey to Torquay station.
The guys that own the company are incredibly friendly and informative as they have worked on boats and trawlers all their lives. Here, below, is a selection of photos taken from our sunset cruise (which included fish & chips from Rockfish, which you can eat on the boat). (Sorry – these photos aren’t as sharp as they might be.)
Boat trips aside, we also had a day out at Exeter Races recently. This is always very relaxed and it’s a beautiful spot up in Haldon Forest. As ever, I (Peter) choose six donkeys and so I returned with empty pockets. Don’t ask me for any tips! In fact the only tips I can help you are how to get there. (In case you’re wondering, Helen’s too sensible to bet.) As for the photo of me as a racegoer – enough said!
Lastly, it’s not really an excursion as it’s only a short walk away from the Somerville, but the Big Wheel has arrived in Torquay and as I write it’s being erected. Proof, if proof were needed, that we are very much heading into the high season.
Back In The Water
While I remember, returning to things maritime, we have had an influx of Barrel jellyfish in and around the harbour. The influx is due to the warm weather. They are about four foot long at their biggest so they’re are quite a sight. You will be pleased to know they are not poisonous, and nor are they edible.
And that’s it for this edition. Bookings for the summer are looking great so – as ever – please remember two things. First: book soon, as once our rooms are full, they’re full, and there are lots of reports that holidays in Britain are going to be very popular this year. And secondly, don’t forget to call me directly to book – that will always guarantee you the best rate: 01803 294755.
Hope to see you soon
Peter and Helen.
